Zira or cumin. An aromatic spice with a light nutty aroma that intensifies when the spice is ground or roasted. It looks like caraway seeds, but cumin seeds are larger and lighter. Zira is very popular in Eastern cuisine, where both whole seeds and powder are used. Cumin is an indispensable ingredient in plov (rise with meat), hummus, sujuk, curry, and an important component of the Indian spice mix garam masala.
